Samenvatting:

"Gene & Dorothy is the story of a long marriage told in the voices of the participants, based on Dorothy's diaries and Gene's autobiography and writings, as they journey together from 1930 to 2000. Hearing these voices enables the reader to experience the early challenges faced by the young couple. They lived through the depression years of the 1930s with three little daughters in Turtle Creek, PA, where Gene trained as an electrical engineer with Westinghouse. They raised three teenagers in Buffalo, NY in the post-World War II era, then retired to prosperous Silicon Valley, California in the 1990s. Gene & Dorothy is an inspiring hymn to marriage, religious faith and survival in the face of poverty, loneliness, and the frustrations of a homebound mother raising three teen-age daughters. It ends with the culminating joy of family life. Most women will empathize with Dorothy as she so movingly records the pressures of living with her mother-in-law, unappreciative teenagers and an exceedingly energetic husband. Most men will appreciate Gene's ability gracefully to accept reduced authority after years of managing young engineers at Westinghouse, then find both pleasure and meaning in volunteer work. Gene and Dorothy's lives recall much of 20th century American history, beginning with Gene's birth in Raton, New Mexico in 1908 (before it was a state), when the United States was still a young and weak nation, through two World Wars, the crises of the 1960s, the Cold War and the country's emergence as the dominant world power in the 21st century. Above all, Gene and Dorothy's story reaffirms the importance and influence of marriage on American society."--provided by publisher.
